Lab Policies

Users in the lab agree to follow certain guidelines for the benefit of the Lab itself and for the benefit of other users.

Priority of Use
While the lab is open to all individuals affiliated with the University of Chicago, its purpose is for work in the area of Computer Science. Therefore students attending a class in the Lab have highest priority. This means that any users not in that class may be asked to vacate seats in the teaching areas for the duration of the class. Those doing homework for a CS class are given the next highest priority. Tutor staff may ask a person doing non-CS work to give up his or her computer if none other is available. Likewise an individual doing any type of academic work is given preference over individuals playing games, reading e-mail, etc. If you notice someone of high priority waiting to use a machine, please allow him or her to use it.

Printing
We strongly urge you to print duplex. Choose this option at the kiosk. We do not allow printing of PDF or PowerPoint files. Please do not print more than one copy of a document. If you need multiple copies, many photocopiers are located throughout the Regenstein Library. The cost of printing is far more expensive than that of photocopying. The photocopiers closest to the Lab are directly across A-Level from the lab, at the beginning of the bookstacks. Do not print more than thirty pages at once. If you have a longer document, break it up into smaller sections in the Print Options box which appears before printing. Also, consider using the n-up option to print 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, or 16 virtual pages respectively on a single sheet of paper. If a printing job over thirty pages is noticed by a tutor, it will be cancelled.

Abuse of the printing facilities by attempting to print very large jobs or a very large number of smaller jobs will result in the loss of printing privileges. Such jobs will be deleted from the print queue.

Color printing is also now available, free of charge until it is determined that this privilege is being abused. Ask a tutor for assistance.

CSIL discourages the printing of any materials that The University of Chicago's policies would deem inappropriate. A pay-for-print system may be installed at the Computer Science Labs sometime in the future.

Courtesy
Since the Lab is used for work, please be courteous to other users and maintain a low level of noise. If you are doing something that requires audio feedback from your machine, please bring headphones to the lab and use them.

Illegal Copying
Software contained in the Public Folder of the MacLab server is either site-licensed to the University for free use by members of the University community, or otherwise freely copyable. It is illegal to copy any other software available in the MacLab, unless specifically designated by your instructor.

Tampering
Users are not to tamper with any equipment, including the printers and print kiosks. Users caught doing so will be immediately ejected from the lab. Modifying the System Folder is also prohibited. If you need to do so for a good reason (i.e. add a font to properly print something out), ask the tutor to do so for you.

Other Restrictions
Drinking, eating, are smoking are strictly prohibited in the Lab. Pets are not allowed.
